Home Maintenance Checklist



Here’s a monthly checklist you can use to keep your home well-maintained and save thousands of dollars.

A regular home maintenance schedule can save you thousands of dollars in repair costs down the road. Even better? You don’t need to be handy to keep your home well-maintained, so today I’ll give you a quick checklist to follow. 

First, though, make sure you keep a monthly calendar. On the same day of each month, write down what you’ll do and what you’ll check. Every Saturday of each month, I recommend setting aside 30 minutes of your day to do the following:


1. Check your HVAC or heater filter. This should be changed monthly or bi-monthly, depending on the grade of filter you use. Adding this task to your schedule will add years to your heating system. 


2. Check your bathroom(s). Specifically, this includes:

• Checking around your toilet for any leaks
• Checking your shower for loose grout, tile, or faucets, and making sure there is no hair buildup clogging the drain
• Checking underneath the bathroom sink for any leaks
• Checking whether the faucet is leaking or loose


Fixing these issues, whether addressing them yourself or hiring a contractor, will save you thousands of dollars. 


3. Make sure the refrigerator is functioning properly. Is there any dust or lint accumulating underneath the door or around the back? If so, clean it up.


4. Inspect the perimeter of the basement for cracks or leaks. If you have a sump pump pit, make sure it’s free of any debris and test your sump pump to make sure it’s functioning properly. If you have a battery backup, make sure that’s fully charged and operational.


5. Walk around the outside of your property and take a look at everything. Is the siding attached? Does anything appear to be out of order? Look at the roof and see whether there are any crooked or missing shingles or whether any nails are sticking out. If there are any problems, call a contractor and have them address the situation. I don’t recommend that any homeowner make roof repairs themselves unless they’re a seasoned contractor.
